In 1997, First Genetics gained its first and only private partner who supplies funds for the entire operation. Thiago DeMoraes, a Brazilian entrepreneur from São Paulo, injected $8.4 billion into First Genetics in two years and is contracted to complete with a further $9.3 billion over the next 12 years.
With such heavy financial backing, both now and for the future, First Genetics has become the biggest genetics laboratory that the world has never heard of.
In 1997, the company moved from the basement of Dr Brockenführ's house to an undisclosed location in the UK. For security reasons, we cannot reveal the whereabouts of the lab's 6,000-acre site.
First Genetics employ over 3,000 personnel from in and around the community where the laboratory is based.
The vast majority of the work undertaken within First Genetics is Classified Information. However, we can tell you that in the financial year 2001 - 2002, First Genetics had 276 separate clients billing a total of $56.2 billion per annum of which $23.7 billion was pre-tax profit.
